Modular Concave System for High-Capacity Combines
Bushel Plus introduces a modular concave architecture designed to reduce crop changeover time and improve threshing consistency in high-throughput harvesting applications.

Modern high-capacity combines increasingly require fast mechanical reconfiguration without compromising grain quality or operator safety. In this context, Bushel Plus Ltd. introduced the X9 Split Frame MAD Concaves™, a modular concave system developed for John Deere X9 Series combines, aimed at reducing crop transition downtime while maintaining controlled threshing and separation performance.
A structural approach to faster crop transitions
Conventional concave changes typically require full component removal, reinstallation, and re-levelling when switching between crop types. The X9 Split Frame MAD Concaves addressed this limitation through a two-part mechanical architecture. A fixed structural split frame remains installed within the combine, while lighter concave inserts—configured for specific crops such as wheat, barley, corn, or soybeans—can be inserted and locked into place.
By separating the load-bearing frame from the crop-specific threshing surfaces, the system reduced changeover time from several hours to approximately 15 minutes in applications where frequent crop switching is required. Because the frame remains aligned in the machine, concave levelling steps were eliminated, reducing manual handling and exposure to injury risks during field or workshop adjustments.
Controlled threshing geometry and grain quality outcomes
The concave inserts were designed to maintain consistent spacing and alignment within the fixed frame, ensuring repeatable threshing geometry across crop types. This mechanical consistency supported controlled material flow through the threshing and separation area, limiting kernel damage and reducing foreign material in the grain sample.
According to field testing conducted across multiple North American harvest conditions, the system achieved lower grain losses and cleaner samples across crop types. These results were associated with reduced cracked kernels and improved sample purity, supporting downstream storage quality and market acceptance while enabling operation at higher harvesting speeds.
Materials and durability under abrasive conditions
All concave components were manufactured from AR-200 abrasion-resistant steel, selected for its wear resistance under prolonged exposure to high-volume crop flow. This material choice supported dimensional stability and consistent performance across varying crop abrasiveness and moisture conditions, reducing wear-related variability over the service life of the concaves.
Integration with existing concave configurations
The split frame concave system was engineered to operate alongside existing Classic X9 MAD Concave models. Operators could deploy the modular split frame units in positions that require frequent adjustment, while retaining conventional concaves in less frequently changed locations.
This mixed configuration approach allowed gradual adoption of the modular architecture without requiring full system replacement. It also preserved prior equipment investments while enabling faster crop-specific optimization where it provided the greatest operational benefit.
Use cases prioritizing grain integrity
The system was positioned for operations where consistent threshing and minimal grain damage are critical, including seed production and quality-sensitive grain handling. The modular insert design enabled rapid mechanical adjustment in response to changing crop or field conditions, helping maintain kernel integrity without extended downtime.
By combining fixed structural alignment with interchangeable threshing elements, the X9 Split Frame MAD Concaves addressed operational efficiency, grain quality control, and operator safety within high-capacity combine harvesting workflows.
